MAZA, transportation saving lives in rural Ghana A Project of M | KBFUS Funds
MAZA is a social enterprise that delivers transportation for urgent health care in rural Ghana.
MAZA's vision is to save lives and reduce disability in the rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa by enabling families to seek health care in a timely, safe and reliable manner. We link rural families going through an urgent or emergency health crises, especially pregnant women and sick infants, with local drivers who have motorized tricycles that can get them to hospital safely and quickly through a mobile technology platform. This provides rural communities with timely access to health care services that are otherwise difficult to reach due to long distances, limited road networks and scarce transportation.
MAZA also increases income-generating opportunities in the rural areas in which we work. We lease motorized tricycles to drivers in remote rural communities at a discounted price in exchange for their being on call for urgent/emergency health care transportation twice a week. For the other five days of the week, they use the tricycles as taxis to earn a living and pay the weekly fee to MAZA. After two years, they own the tricycles outright. This design enables the drivers to earn a decent income in the short term and own an asset that will generate income in the medium term, while also increasing access to local markets for traders and farmers.
We began with Chereponi District in the Northern Region of Ghana in December 2015 with 13 tricycles and aim to scale up to additional rural districts in Ghana starting in January 2017. MAZA was one of only eight organizations to be selected for an innovation grant award by the USAID Systems for Health Project in Ghana. That grant, in the amount of US $150,000, will enable us to scale up to a second district in Northern Ghana called Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo. However, there is a catch - this grant requires a 1:1 match. The good news is that we have already been able to secure $75,000 towards the match; the challenge is that we have to raise another $75,000 by December 31st, 2016 so that we can access the full grant amount. This $75,000 will be used for buying 30 additional motorized tricycles, including registration and insurance, as well as training for 30 local drivers in Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District.
Please help us reach 50% of our fundraising goal for 2016 by donating to MAZA today!
Thank you on behalf of MAZA and the families of Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District.
