About the Synagogue
After the Second World War, the heavily affected Jewish community could no longer afford the recovery of the destroyed synagogue. So, they had to sell it. It would change hands many times.
The synagogue subsequently had different owners. With each owner, the building was further damaged. The building was used as a workshop and storage space. At one point it was even used as a smoker's room. Newspaper articles in the 1980's and 1990's by Gelsaar journalist Arend Heideman about the possible disappearance and significance of this heritage gave rise to a renewed interest.
Help us continue that mission.
